Dr. Basak Ozoral, visiting professor at Qatar University, spoke to us on the Imperial Harem, Women in the Ottoman Palace. The Ottoman Empire was in reign from 1299-1923 and had 36 sultans with 242 wives. The harem lived in the Topkapi Palace where the Valide Sultan (mother of the ruling sultan) kept order and peace in the harem where there could be up to 400 women. The Ottoman Empire was so vast in land area, that Qatar was part of the empire until 1868.
April was a busy month for the AWA. The monthly dinner was a Dhow dinner cruise, which was well attended. There were also outings to the Sheik Fisal Museum and Museum of Islamic Art to see the special exhibit, Gifts of the Sultans. Instead of a coffee meeting, we went to a Turkish Tea at Sukar Pasha at Katara. We also participated in a cultural exchange hosted by the QWA where we shared American culture.

This month’s speaker was the AWA’s own Joanne Blakemore, A Volunteer on a Global Mission.
