This month's General Meeting was held in the Grand Hyatt on January 14 with more than 100 women in attendance to include many seasoned members, new members and guests. It was a delight to see such a diverse group of women coming together to socialize, participate, and volunteer with the AWA. We hope you all were entertained and enlightened by the event. The highlight of the morning was a fascinating presentation by Mr Mohamed Al Mushiri. Mr. Mohamed is writing a book titled: "Cultural Gap Bridging ". He spoke about self-improvement, and simply how to enhance the understanding of other cultures and improve communication with others from different cultures. |
A culture gap is any systematic difference between two cultures which hinders mutual understanding or relations. Such differences include the values, behaviour, education, and customs of the respective cultures. Culture gaps can relate to religion, ethnicity, age, or social class. Examples of cultural differences that may lead to gaps include social norms and gender roles. The term can also be used to refer to misunderstandings within a society, such as between different scientific specialties.

It was a delight to see such a diverse group of women coming together to socialize, participate, and volunteer with the AWA. We hope you all were entertained and enlightened by the event.

An Action-Packed October General Meeting
This month's General Meeting was held in the Grand Hyatt on October 10 with more than 100 women in attendance to include many seasoned members, new members and guests. It was a delight to see such a diverse group of women coming together to socialize, paticipate, and volunteer with the AWA. We hope you all were entertained and enlightened by the event.
The highlight of the morning was a fascinating presentation by Dr. Ma'an N. R. Al Ani, the Qatar-based biomedical research scientist who was the first to discover a new technique of using nano- materials and nanomedical devices for diagnosis and prevention of breast cancer. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, this is a timely topic for a disease which effects millions of women worldwide and is the most common cancer diagnosed in women.
In addition, the group was briefed by Qatar Airways on their top-notch services and we were instructed on how to access our exclusive AWA discount. Winnie Li from the Qatar Film Institute said a few words about DFI-Doha Tribeca Film Festival and promoted their current screening of the award-winning Beglian film, THE KID WITH A BIKE. Tickets for this film were sold on the spot.
We thank all of you who joined us and we welcome all those who weren't able to attend to join us in November.

A Note from our Hospitality Team...
There are many lovely ladies within the AWA, and we feel that it is our job in hospitality to get you all moving around (instead of sitting in your apartment, villa, etc!) and to get to meet each other at different outings. As most of us are here with husbands or families, I wouldn't want to exclude them, even though it is the American Women's Association. Therefore there will also be events in the evenings and/or weekends, where you are welcome to bring family with you, but please remember that most of our events are only for Members and their families, not generally extended to friends. (Invite your friends to join the AWA!)
We would love your participation (as we are a fun group!), however, there is no pressure for you to get involved with everything. All that we ask is that if you do sign up for something, please do turn up, or indeed, let us know in advance that you can no longer attend.
Here are a few of the ongoing hospitality events that will take place during the course of 2012-2013 AWA year:
Due to the limited spaces available for these events, we kindly ask that you register for these events in person and provide a nominal deposit that assures your participation. As a member, you are able to sign up at the General Meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month. You are also invited to sign up for events at the Coffee Socials (hosted by various AWA members)on the 3rd Monday of the month. In order to hold your spot for an activity, a nominal deposit is typically required so please bring a bit of cash with you when registering. If spaces still remain as the event nears, we will rebroadcast events via e-mail.
Once you are registered, we will send you the event details to include directions and/or meeting location, etc. Join us!
Members are invited to login to see our current event calendar.
